Learn How to Read Guitar Sheet Music Easily

Distinguish the Guitar Segment
If you know how to read guitar sheet music, you will notice that the piece does not necessarily have to contain only guitar parts. The piece of music may also have horn, string, bass and piano parts among others. The guitar segment will clearly be identified, so the only segment that should be paid attention to is that of the guitar.

Bass Clef or Treble Clef?
The generally accepted rule when it comes to distinguishing which clef to be played by the guitarist is the guitar parts with the six strings are ordinarily within the treble clef while guitar parts for the bass are normally within the bass clef. How is it that someone is able to identify each clef? It is simple because the bass clef is always written below the treble clef. The treble clef’s five lines moving from the lowest to the highest are E-G-B-D-F.  A famous saying that goes, Every Good Boy Does Fine works well as a way of recalling the five lines of the treble clef. As for the bass clef lines, they also move from the low notes to the high ones and they are G-B-D-F-A. To remember this, one can use the phrase Good Boys Deserve Fudge Always.

Establish the Key of the Song
A song’s keys are the scale in which the song is in and this determines the notes that the song will be based. A suitable way of identifying the key that a song has is to check the chords or notes that the song begins and finishes with. That’s the fastest way to learn how to read guitar sheet music. Incase a song happens to start with a D; it is most likely that its key is D. Although the standard way of doing this is by establishing the key signature, which is a sequence of flats and sharps which are shown at the start of each line on any sheet of music. The song’s keys can be determined by the amount of flats and sharps. This format is based on a theory in music known as circle of fifths.

Establish Time Signature
Lastly, the time signature comes into the picture. Once it has already been established which the guitar parts are, you will know if you should emphasize on the treble clef or the bass clef while knowing the key of the song. At this point, you will need to distinguish the song’s rhythm or its time signature that is shown at the start of every line and displayed in fraction form. For instance, time signature 4/4 is normally used in pop and rock music. In musical language, the time signature shows that quarter notes get a full beat (the lower half of each fraction) in addition to four beats for each measure (the upper half of each fraction). The ¾ time signature in contrast, shows the musician that each quarter note receives a single beat with three beats for each measure. As you read guitar sheet music, you will notice that the three-quarter time signature is normally used in swing music and waltzes.
