Playing the metal guitar is a totally different proposition as compared to other guitars. Metal guitar incorporates a widely varied style of playing and it would be wrong to assume that there is only one single technique involved in playing the metal guitar. In fact some metal guitarists are quite apt at playing different techniques within the metal framework and they make it very appealing. However, a point to be noted would be that there certain basic factors which is purely common to all metal guitar players.
Minor Key: Most of the metal songs are written in the minor keys since the major keys in a metal guitar is sometimes too loud and too lively to bring out the essence of the songs. Of course major keys are used in some metal songs, but more often than not you will find that metal songs are written in minor keys to get the feel of the song right.
Pedal Points: This is a technique more favored by metal guitarists since this helps to maintain the rhythm and allows for accentuation on the chords. Using pedal points while playing the metal guitar is generally called “chugging” or “galloping” and is common among most successful metal guitar players.
Fast Tempo Songs: Fast tempo songs lend themselves well to metal guitar playing and hence have more usage than slow tempo songs. So, if you are a metal guitarist then you need to learn how to synchronize your pick hand and your fret hand well and play tight when the drummer picks up the pace.
You will need to remember that the above mentioned points are just general rules followed by metal guitarists and not some laid down conditions.
