How to Hold A Guitar Pick Correctly

“Plectrum” as we call it now days is made of plastic whereas these were originally made from tortoise shell or animal bone. Although these are of various shapes and sizes, it is recommended that one should use the medium size picks to play a guitar with ease. It is always suggested to try out some picks and then choose the ideal one for oneself.

Pick is a very small thing and a guitarist has more than 10 picks for playing guitar. As these are easily lost and displaced to keep a number of picks is not at all astonishing for a guitar player.

Firstly, take your right hand and stretch your palm facing your left hand side. Grip the fist slightly and place your thumb across the first knuckle of your index finger. Then you place the pick in between the index finger and the thumb. Do not place the pick deep into your hand, as you need to stroke the strings of the guitar. Hold the pick in such a way so that the tip of the pick strokes the strings.

Next try to stroke the strings slowly to get the clear sound. In the beginning, the pick may slip out of your hand but you should not be frustrated about that rather try harder. Now, you must be wondering how hard it is to learn how to hold guitar pick. But do not worry regular practice and you would be through to this.

You can place your other fingers as you wish but there are two ways to place them. You either keep holding them or keep them free. I keep my fingers extended for various reasons. In some cases, one needs to stroke the pick and move the fingers to hit the strings at a time. With advanced guitar playing skills you can change the volume, play the tremolo arm and also tap in case of an electric guitar.

There are also three different ways of holding the pick that might seem easy to you but I personally don’t recommend those.

Holding the pick in the middle finger and the thumb makes it hard for you to stroke strings in the future, but it is easy to hold the pick steadily. The flexibility decreases when you place the pick in between the second knuckle of the index finger. When you hold the pick with three fingers, it leaves you with two fingers to strum the strings, which might hold you back from playing tougher guitar music.
