The guitar that is played with the fingers and is used for performing Bossa Nova is the Bossa Nova guitar. It may be used for playing the underlying or background rhythm in big group concerts. It was Joao Gilberto who epitomized his performances with the Bossa Nova guitar. It was originally derived from the Samba ensemble or tamborim and developed into a nylon-string classical guitar that is played not with the pick but with fingers!

Major seventh chords are unique to Bossa Nova music. However, if you are a beginner, learning just three of these seven chords should suffice. A major seventh, C major seventh, and F major seventh are the chords that you should learn as a beginner. After strumming the signature sound of these chords is peculiar depending upon which they are recognized. C major seven is nothing but addition of B note and C Chord. Strum or drop your finger on B string and you will achieve C major seven. Addition of E note is indicated for the F chord and addition of G# is indicated for A chord. How to pluck the strings in Bossa Nova Guitar?
A special method is used for plucking and damping the strings in Bossa Nova. For providing ample rhythm, 4 strings are plucked and damped. The chord sequence is highlighted by damping the strings at varied intervals. Use the three fingers to pluck the top three strings and use your thumb for the base strings. All strings should be plucked and damped harmoniously for better effect.
For the backing chords to have a subtle and softer feel, nylon stringed guitars are advised. To gain an authentic Latin feel to your Bossa Nova guitar, you should use the technique of plucking and damping. It’s worth it.
